Once a year, around October, the Wodaabe tribespeople gather after the rainy season for an enchanting festival known as the Gerewol. This vibrant courtship ritual encourages young Wodaabe men to showcase their creativity and charm. Through dance, they celebrate their tallness, white eyes, and bright smiles, captivating the hearts of women.
Adorned with beautiful face paint, layers of sparkling jewelry, fancy hats, and stunning costumes, the men create a mesmerizing spectacle. In Chad, during the Gerewol festival, these nomads participate in a unique beauty pageant where the women or girls of the tribe select men. Typically, the women are younger than the men, and in this polygamous society, they are regarded as fair game for selection.
